Training
Training OverviewThe normal starting age is about 4-5years of age and should be in primary school. Juveniles athletes go up to the age of about 19, these then graduate to Junior men and women, followed by Senior men/women and finally Veterans.
Training
For the "Little Athletics" group (ages 4-8) the training is mainly based around fun and games, that ultimately build up the child's coordination, balance and agility. When the kids then move into the older age groups, the winter training programme centers on Cross country running. Races at this level are typically a distance of 600m for the under 10s, up to about 2000m for the Under 16s. In the summer time the training is focused on track and field, with athletes concentrating on speed running and the other sports such as long jump, high jump, discuss, javelin etc. Adults too can participate in track and field and cross country running. At present we have a broad cross section of adult runners who range from those who run competitively on weekends, to those who simply want to jog to keep fit.
Training Times
Tuesday 7-8pm behind Lusk National School Sunday 10.30am (Cross Country Runners) at Ardgillan Castle. Volunteers Needed !!
Due to the popularity of the Little Athletics, we need help from parents, older youths or volunteers to assist us in training and maintaining the safety of our kids. If you can help in anyway please contact Linda Mc Nally or any committee member of the club for further details. The last thing we want to do is start restricting membership numbers. You will be surprised just how enjoyable little athletics is.
