2012 News

Upcoming Courses

A number of courses are available in the coming weeks.

On 13/2/12 we will be holding a Code of Ethics course for all mentors working with Juveniles. Please revert to Colm McNally or myself to book a place on this.

Also, A Little Athletics mentors course is planned for Saturday 3rd March in Raheny. This course will give you the confidence to plan and provide training to the 6-8 year olds within the club. An Assistant Coaches course is planned for 24th March in Donore Harriers club house, Dublin. This course provides an excellent basic course for anyone working with Juveniles from 9 to 19.

A Level-1 training course is planned for the 24th & 25th February and 9th & 10th March. This course is held over 4 sessions and provides an internationally recognised qualification in coaching. It will provide you with the skills needed to train athletes in all the events, that make up athletics.

For anyone wishing to take part in these courses, online registration will be available in the coming days.

If you have any queries on any of these courses, please contact me at 086 8519306 or this email. Although some people have already indicated that they would wish to uptake some of these courses, it would be good to know the level of interest in these among clubs members. So, please let me know and I will try to accomadate as best I can.

The policy of the club is to cover 2/3rds of the cost of these courses. Typically the Level-1 course cost is €60 with €40 being paid by the club. Assistant coach and Little Athletics course are typically €40 and again 2/3rds covered by the club.

With good coaching you will feel more confident about the programmes you deliver. It will give you the ability to develop your children's skills and your own knowledge base of sport/health issues.

Regards, Seamus.

Code of Ethics Course

For athletes of 12 years and older there are workshops in Santry this Saturday on Shot Putt or Hurdles. The workshops will be from 11:30 to 1pm and cost just €2. This is a great was to learn a new sport or improve the skills you already have.

A number of adults are planning to take part in the Raheny 5-mile race on the 29th of this month. It is not too late to register. On the day, there is also a short race for Juveniles.

As we are now officially back in training in 2012 there are a couple of items of note;

1) Membership forms are available on the web or through the mentors. Good practice means that we must insist on membership of the club for all those taking part in training or competition activities.

2) Our club agm is planned for the 25th of this month. This is your chance to have a say in the future direction of the club. Further details to follows.

3) A code of ethics course is planned for the 13th of February. These course ensures that mentors and children are protected. All mentors, or prospective mentors should attend.

4) New Mentors are needed at all levels within the club. To allow us provide the safe and continuous training to the athletes we must have a sufficient number of mentors. Having more mentors will allow us create rosters so that the training can be shared among many and that no one person is under pressure. The club will organise all the training and support needed - all we need from you is the committment of 1 or more hours on any given week. Please contact myself at this email address, or on 086 8519306, or any of the other mentors to find out how you can become more involved.

5) Our Little Athletics section remains a very popular element of the club. Due to the size of the school hall we continue to have to curtail membership of this group. In this regard we are reviewing the ages of the children within the Little Athletics section. Those who are born in 2004 or earlier, may now be capable of training outdoors with the older kids. This will free up spaces for those who have been waiting to join the Little Athletics.

6) Training on Thursday nights is on from 7:30 to 8:30pm and is focused on adults and older kids. We also regularly run on Sunday mornings in Ardgillan park at 11:45am. If you wish to receive texts about some of these sessions, then please revert to 086 8519306. If on the other hand you are receiving unwanted text or email, please let me know and I will remove you from group communications.

Yours in sport, Seamus.

Indoor events in February

To those likely to take part in the upcoming Indoor competitons: Please find the attached information from Dublin County Board.
We will be registering athletes ahead of the competitions, so this is just to alert you of the impending events.
it is great if we can have people to help out on the days - you don't need to be expert; in some cases all that is needed is someone to take names etc.
It also makes the day go faster and you get more enjoyment and knowledge about the sport.

Regards, Seamus.
